Birds of Curaçao, Aruba, and Bonaire

On the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao), a surprisingly rich collection of birds flutters, sings, and scurries around — from small chatterers to proud raptors. Despite the dry climate and salty winds, more than 200 bird species manage to find their way to these islands. Some can be admired here year-round, while others pass through on migration or come to overwinter.

Perhaps the most famous resident is the troupial (Icterus icterus), with its bright orange belly and melodious song. A true eye-catcher! On Bonaire and Curaçao, you can often hear the call of the lora or yellow-winged amazon parrot — a rare and protected species. Aruba has its own pride: the shoco, a small owl that hunts during the day and is found only on the island.

Along the salt flats and mangroves, you’ll often see flamingos elegantly standing on one leg, as if posing for a postcard. They filter algae and small crustaceans from the water with their unique beaks. Herons, shorebirds, and plovers also feel at home here, especially during the wet periods.

Birdwatchers can indulge their passion, as each island has its own special species to spot. Think of hummingbirds buzzing from flower to flower or the impressive caracara (a raptor with attitude). Even the sky is lively, with frigatebirds soaring in the wind as if they don’t have to do a thing.

Whether you're enthusiastically walking around with binoculars or simply sitting under a tree daydreaming, the birds of the ABC islands always bring a touch of magic.

Vogels van Curaçao, Aruba en Bonaire

NL.Op de ABC-eilanden (Aruba, Bonaire en Curaçao) fladdert, zingt en scharrelt een verrassend rijke verzameling vogels rond – van kleine kwetteraars tot trotse roofvogels. Ondanks het droge klimaat en de zoute wind weten meer dan 200 vogelsoorten hun weg te vinden naar deze eilanden. Sommigen zijn hier het hele jaar door te bewonderen, anderen zijn op doortrek of komen speciaal overwinteren.

Misschien wel de bekendste bewoner is de troupial (Icterus icterus), met zijn feloranje buik en melodieuze zang. Een echte eyecatcher! Op Bonaire en Curaçao hoor je ook regelmatig de roep van de lora of geelvleugelamazonepapegaai – een zeldzame en beschermde soort. Aruba heeft z’n eigen trots: de shoco, een kleine uil die overdag jaagt en alleen daar voorkomt.

Langs de zoutpannen en mangroves zie je vaak flamingo’s elegant stilstaan op één poot, alsof ze poseren voor een ansichtkaart. Ze filteren algen en kleine kreeftjes uit het water met hun bijzondere snavel. Ook reigers, steltlopers en plevieren voelen zich hier thuis, vooral in de natte periodes.

Vogelaars kunnen hun hart ophalen, want op elk eiland zijn bijzondere soorten te spotten. Denk aan kolibries die flitsend van bloem naar bloem zoemen, of de indrukwekkende cara cara (een soort roofvogel met attitude). Zelfs de lucht is levendig, met fregatvogels die op de wind zweven alsof ze er niets voor hoeven doen.

Of je nu fanatiek met een verrekijker rondloopt of gewoon onder een boom zit te mijmeren: de vogels van de ABC-eilanden zorgen altijd voor een vleugje magie.
