The Crested Caracara is a striking bird of prey with a strong beak, long legs, and a sharp, almost cheeky expression. Often mistaken for an eagle, it’s actually a clever, opportunistic falcon. On the ABC islands, you might spot it striding across open fields or even along roadsides, as if on an important mission. It eats just about anything: carrion, insects, and small animals. In flight it looks noble, but on the ground it’s surprisingly active. With its small crest, piercing gaze, and confident attitude, the caracara is a raptor you won’t soon forget.

De Kuif Caracara is een opvallende roofvogel met een stevige snavel, lange poten en een alerte, bijna brutale uitstraling. The Shoco hunts during the day, feeding on insects and small creatures, often from a lookout perch on a rock or fence post. The American Kestrel is the smallest falcon in the Americas, but don’t let its size fool you. It hunts insects, lizards, and small birds, often from a perch or while hovering mid-air. Its flight is graceful, its strike lightning-fast. You can recognize it by its reddish back and bluish-gray wings. Despite its size, it’s a proud and fearless bird of prey – always alert, always on the move.

De Amerikaanse torenvalk is de kleinste valk van Noord- en Zuid-Amerika, maar onderschat hem niet. Calm and focused, this hawk is a quiet force in the sky – a symbol of alertness and elegance over the island landscape.

The Snail Kite is a graceful bird of prey with a very specific taste: snails! Using its long, sharply curved beak, it effortlessly extracts the soft body from apple snails or freshwater snails. Though rare on the ABC islands, it may appear near marshy or brackish water areas. The male is slate gray with reddish legs and bill base; the female is brown with light streaks. It glides slowly over wetlands, scanning the surface for its favorite meal. Not powerful, but precise – the snail kite is nature’s specialist: elegant, focused, and surprisingly efficient.

De slakkenwouw is een elegante roofvogel met een duidelijke voorkeur: slakken! Met zijn lange, kromme snavel peutert hij moeiteloos het vlees uit de schelp van appel- of vijverslakken. The Black Vulture may not win beauty contests, but it plays a vital role in the ecosystem. With its dark feathers, bald gray head, and wide wingspan, it often soars over the warm skies of the ABC Islands in search of carrion. It cleans up the dead, helping to keep disease in check. Many black vultures come over from Venezuela, making them temporary guests on the islands. In the air, it’s graceful and gliding; on the ground, awkward but efficient. Not a hunter – but a much-needed helper in nature’s balance.

De zwarte gier is misschien geen schoonheid volgens klassieke standaarden, maar hij speelt een onmisbare rol in het ecosysteem. Met zijn zwarte verenkleed, kale grijze kop en brede vleugels zie je hem vaak cirkelen boven de warmere delen van de ABC-eilanden, op zoek naar aas.
